Aryeh Sits down with photographer Asher Wilens to talk about photographing and retouching the worlds 3rd largest diamond;"The Incomparable Diamond"

This week, I had the opportunity to work on an image of the 3rd largest diamond in the world. Owned by clients of ImagingPrep, it was very exciting to be a part of history in documenting this one of a kind "thing", that is valued at 30 million dollars.

An interview with NY photographer, Asher Wilens, will be coming this week. How do you give all your work that same attention and deliver quality work you want EVERY time?

As a member, you have access to all previously and newly published webcasts. Topics include: new jewelry photography techniques, Photoshop techniques, and any other material related to jewelry imaging. Every topic has one criteria that it must meet: work towards making better images that sell more and make more money.

Print, read, reference, and follow lighting guides to get your setup and technique “just right”. Anyone can create the lighting setups with VERY minimal materials. Again, its not WHAT you have, but HOW you use it. We present you with clear instructions on “how” to setup a shooting environment that will bring you to your goal of selling more and making more money from your images ALONE.

 Engagement ring photography instructions

Engagement ring photography

Engagement rings, rings in general, and diamonds are all there own beast unique consideration. It is difficult to recommend a setup, or rather, a big responsibility to be in charge of saying "I think this is the best way to do it". There are a number of styles of photography in actuality. Engagement rings have been broken down into just a few styles for photography that you see in past "branded advertisement" images and every trend that has developed since.

The lighting setup you can have like the one described in this video and others, will work VERY well, despite the challenge.... It will not let you down. You will be able to take consistently GOOD "out of the camera" images, AND great retouched ones.

I think it is such a good setup, that I would recommend ANY piece be shot using it.

 Jewelry eCatalog

eCatalogs - Put Your Catalog Online

Create an eCatalog in just minutes. Prep your image files, save them in the right image folder, specify the file names in the configuration file using a text editor or Dreamweaver, and upload the folder contents. Vwala...easy, fast, and REALLY a great resource. Branch out to customers who can access your catalog on the fly. Instead of being a catalog on the shelf of a retailer, a wholesaler, or a consumer, make your catalog a "bookmark". Include the link in your email signature. Increase the views on your product by making it easy on you AND more importantly your customer.

Lighting bangles & large polished items

This webcast covers shooting large pieces that have consistent form and texture throughout. The lighting challenge for these pieces is to have the light consistently "sweeping" across the piece. Regular lighting setups, which can be forgiving on pieces with more textured and varying forms, do not work across the board. The setup we discuss describes minimalistic lighting that doesnt take away from, but rather, enhances the simple forms and contours.
 Watch photography propping techniques

Propping Tools and Methods

There are lots of tools available for propping up a product. In this project, we wanted an effect that cannot be well duplicated through other processes or emulated with Photoshop steps. The BEST way, in this specific case, and others similar to it, is to create a set that styles the piece like you envision. To do this though, you will need some tools. Do not rely on "out of the box" jewelry photography stands and tools. Problem solve. FIRST, know what you want, and then, figure out your options for getting to your goal and having success.
 Jewelry photography

Controlling Light

Photoshop is great. If you produce great images with any tool, you have succeeded. Making that easier however, comes from getting the most out of your photography and lighting. This setup incorporates new tools and adjustment and emphasis on previous tools..
 gemstone jewelry photography

Retouching Gemstone Jewelry

Combining Images

Jewelry photography is not all about technical know-how, and technique. That helps when using your camera and Photoshop. However, during the shooting process and in post production, we are enabled to make slight changes to the way we shoot our product that has huge affects on the final composition. In this webcast we go into some basic principals and some good methods of combing and achieving a composition that is well styled.
 Jewelry photography

Jewelry & Watch Styling

Jewelry Photography styling using Photoshop's robust and dynamic program can create stunning results days, weeks, or even years after the initial image was created. Tweaking, is a true understatement. Take control of you style with these demo videos.
 Jewelry photography

Jewelry Lighting Equipment

In this weeks webinar library addition, we go through 8 different jewelry images. The images were created using three different cameras. A Nikon Cool Pix 8700 "point and shoot" camera, a Canon 30D "DSLR", and a Canon 5D "full frame DSLR". Three different lighting systems were used as well. In this movie we go over the use of an MK light box, constant lighting, and strobe lighting. In addition we discuss how to look at jewelry to "read" what kind of setup was used and where each is most appropriate.
 Jewelry photography

Pendant and Necklace Photography

This webcast covers a light setup used to photograph pendants and necklaces. This is not the "end all" and good for everything setup. This setup is specific to the type of control and image it produces. Success using this setup, comes from using tools to bounce light. If you dont properly use the available light with the tools, you will not benefit from this setup. However, it provides a great way to work with, and become familiar with what a foam-core bounce, and a silver card can "do" for your image. Use it as your setup or as a learning tool. Either way, enjoy.
 Jewelry photography

Colored Diamond Rings

How do you photograph colored diamonds? The process is very similar to regular diamonds. In this chapters lesson we cover the light setup for shooting colored diamonds, retouching the photograph, copying the image to create a composition, and manipulating the shadows in Photoshop to emulate natural shadows.
 Jewelry photography

Jewelry Photography Basics

For those new to jewelry photography, and looking to become more familiar with how the camera and lighting interact and relate to watch other, this chapter provides a "crash course" overview. In addition, the lessons include an introduction to the tools we will be using throughout many of the chapters and lessons to retouch our jewelry images using Photoshop.
Jewelry photography

Photoshop Illustrating

In this weeks webcast we create an image for an ad using elements thats are illustrated in Photoshop. The box that the ring sits on in this image is created using basic concepts of perspective. In addition, we use the information we have about the lighting of the piece to guide us on creating tones, shadows, and highlights on the box. These elements together create a photo realistic graphic that is created from basic rules of light and perspective.

Jewelry Video Production

Learn this week how we create the video to the left. We used regular set tools and a DSLR camera to create this flawless movement. See how video will change your approach to imaging with a different approach developed by ImagingPrep for you.
Jewelry photography

Necklace on Black

In this webcast, we shoot a necklace with the goal of having an original image that has a black background and requires minimal editing. Unlike previous methods, this webcast covers lighting our set using bounced light only, and in this case, the light reflected is what we use to expose, style, and create our image. This was a great success and the start of exploring new techniques.
 Jewelry photography

Light Modeling

The pin we shoot in this webcast has a number of different textures created by the varying materials. This chapter includes lessons that show the light setup for creating the image, how we edit the image, and techniques for editing this item with minimal Photoshop work. *Note: The image above has a Photoshop created shadow. The lessons in this chapter include techniques for creating a shadow that requires less "shadow painting" in Photoshop. Other chapters and lessons however, do cover the techniques we use to take an image we have pathed and apply shadow simulation techniques using Photoshop.* Topics covered in this chapter include; lighting for jewelry with varying components/materials, creating a custom "light box", and easy Photoshop editing of our jewelry.
Jewelry photography

Rings With Many Stones

This Simon G. ring, we photograph using light setup that works well for many different types of jewelry styles. In this photograph we concentrated on capturing the contrast of the stones with the finished gold the stones are set in. We used a Canon 5D to shoot this piece, a set that we illustrate in the lessons, and Photoshop. In photoshop, we enhance the presence of the diamonds and gemstones, correct the color of the gold, and apply a shadow to give the ring presence and body.
 Jewelry photography

Photographing Jewelry on a White Background

If you open most any fashion magazine, you will see a classic fashion photography style used to create a "blown out" background and a correctly exposed subject. In this chapter we take the technique used in fashion photography and apply it to jewelry photography. Using the regular tools we keep handy for our "set" building, we create a miniaturized version of a classic fashion shoot setup and simulate the "blown out" background environment for hanging jewelry. This works best for necklaces, pendants, earrings, and watches too. *Note: rings are not well suited for this setup.* In addition to creating a set that we can photograph our jewelry items and get a white background coming from the camera, we also cover Photoshop techniques to remove blemishes, correct color, and apply a natural looking shadow.
 Jewelry photography

Jewelry Photography Lighting

This chapter introduces the different equipment the market offers for jewelry photography. The lessons are not meant to recommend one over the other. In other chapters, we discuss the actual outcome and variances in how each setup affects how we photograph jewelry, and how are final product is impacted. This chapter is an introduction to strobe lighting, incandescent lighting, and "out of the box" products for jewelry photography.
 Jewelry photography

Diamond Jewelry Photography

This chapter covers shooting diamond jewelry. Included is the light, camera, and Photoshop techniques we use to create the images sampled. The main objective of this series of lessons is to give a thorough guide for how we photograph bracelets. In the last lesson for this chapter we will also make a composed image using our single bracelet photograph, and other jewelry items. The lesson topics covered are: Lighting for photographing a diamond tennis bracelet, the camera setup, styling, and retouching the image in Photoshop. This is an excellent introduction to "creating" a shadow in Photoshop. Part of prepping the image is to isolate, or "cut it out" from its original background. We then are able to apply dynamic shadows with character and direction to the photograph.
 Jewelry photography

Loose Diamond Photography

In this chapter we cover photographing loose diamonds. For this setup, we complete the project using "hot lights", light modifiers, a Canon 30D, and Photoshop. This is a complete project chapter, and covers all steps involved in photographing, lighting, and retouching loose diamonds. Loose diamond images are very valuable for any online or brick and mortar jewelry retailer or jewelry photographer. In this chapter, we use our finished, loose ascher cut diamond image, to replace round diamonds set in a basket stud setting, and “create” a new piece. Loose diamond images can be used for many purposes. This includes; engagement ring builder tools, diamond stud builders, and other solitaire and engagement jewelry lines offered with different shaped diamonds.

Watch Set Lighting

This chapter covers the elements that go into creating successful watch photography. Watches, in general, have three characteristics to note when we decide on a lighting setup. They are: the face, dial, and band. The lessons cover how to setup lighting to accommodate for each part of the watch. The setup for photographing watches is not the same as jewelry because of the nature of how a watch is made. In upcoming webcast, we will be covering how to photograph a watch to capture all omelets, but the dial. We will then create a new environment for the dial and photograph that part of the watch separately. Photoshop enables us to easily combine 2 photographs, which in the case of watch photography, is sometimes very useful.

Cameras for Jewelry Photography

This chapter is geared towards introducing you to the different digital cameras available for photographing jewelry. This illustrated guide, examines what what components are different in each camera and how the different technology affects your final jewelry image. We cover all cameras that are appropriate for photographing jewelry. They include: digital point and shoot cameras, DSLR cameras, and medium and large format cameras equipped with digital backs. The lessons in this chapter discuss the basic principles that separate each camera, but also how they all have shared components that create a very similar end result. The variance in quality that the cameras we discuss for jewelry photography produce, largely, comes from the entire process of lighting, photographing, and editing. All subjects that are covered in chapters explaining how to photograph jewelry. Our motto is, "Its not what you have, it's what you do with it." In this chapters lessons, we go over examples of images that come from different cameras and setups and how each element in the process affects the final product.

Animating Still Images

This webcast covers creating an animation of a closer inspection of a jewelry photo. This moving close up does not require the user to navigate a cumbersome flash tool or other zoom windows. Using a simple and free screen capture tool and Photoshop, we are able to use our existing knowledge of Photoshop, and apply it to making an animation. Simmilarly, we could use flash. However, avoiding a new learning curve and interface, the technique used in this project allows for "out of the box" animations and better imaging of jewelry.
 Jewelry photography

Jewelry Photography Backgrounds

Shooting on a background other than white, can often ad a new design element to a website or print ad. In this webcast we cover how to place jewelry photographed on a white background and place it on a textured and colored background we create in Photoshop.
 Jewelry photography

Watch Photography

This webcast covers a full length project covering how to photograph a watch. A member request was made specifically to explore watch photography further. The techniques we show give you huge flexibility when producing a final image for watches and other jewelry. Watch the wrap up to see what is covered.
 Jewelry photography

Large Diamond Jewelry

Larger diamonds featured on jewelry usually feature more diamond than material of the design the stones are set in. Ultimately, this means that the style of the piece, which is minimal, needs to be communicated, as well as the presence of stones. In this webcast, we cover techniques to shoot diamond jewelry, edit diamonds separate of the rest of the image, and place the piece in an environment that captures its presence and weight.
 Jewelry photography

The Pen Tool

This webcast covers the use of the pen tool. This tool is super important and will come in handy almost every time you enter Photoshop and edit jewelry. The tool creates "anchor points" and is easily adjusted with "direction lines". With the pen tool you can isolate images, create selections that follow your "path" that you create and have full control over, and more. To get started, this webcast provides a complete overview. If you are familiar with it, this video will also show a couple of techniques that are very helpful in creating quick paths for you image.

Splashing Product

Many high end advertisements produced for the industry feature unique elements, no pun intended, such as water. This weeks webcast features a look into advertising photography for watches and jewelry using water. The technique for setting up to shoot a watch splashing in water is illustrated and each tool is discussed. This webcast also features a complete demo of the Photoshop retouching steps used to create the final image.
 Jewelry photography

Tiffany Photography

A Tiffany photo look is easily achievable in minutes without a complicated lighting or camera setup. How do we prove this? We used a Nikon Cool Pix 8700, hot lights, diffusion paper, and black cards. The result: a solid "branded" look that took minutes.
 Jewelry photography

Photoshop Airbrushing

This weeks webcast covers individual editing demos for images that require a high level of Photoshop mediating. In this webcast, we will focus on the interior of the ring image. "Airbrushing", is a popular term for retouching images and jewelry. However, in addition to a more hands on approach, while useful and effective, default Photoshop tools can be used to create the same effect without the need for a painterly touch.
 Jewelry photography

Pearl Photography

This webcast covers pearl photography, the light setup used (illustrated), and Photoshop editing of our image. The styling and studio setup is designed to highlight characteristics unique to pearls, such as: shape, texture, and luster.
 Jewelry photography

Photographing on Black

This webcast covers a black, reflective, and high polished beads shot on a black foamcor background. The lighting in this webcast is illustrated and viewable on the video page link. This setup uses all black, in a technique that is especially good for round forms and similar.
