Is Flash a tool of the past? Not really, but for some, yes. CSS is easier to design with, text is better for SEO, and other scripting languages are available in wonderful snippets through many open source projects. So...what do you do if you want to have a little video? Work with what you have got. Ultimately, when working with jewelry and animation, the most important thing you have available is your image. Flash and other programs are only tools that will allow you to make something move. While this is a huge understatement, in the case of showcasing photography, so many things can be done without learning HOW to make Flash move things the way you want. If this is confusing, I offer an analogy: I could clear the snow off my walkway using a shovel, or I could use a snowblower and do the same. Looking at my bottom lines, it doesn't matter how I do it, what I want is to not have wet feet when I walk outside, or old ladies (and men) slipping. In the end of this hypothetical situation I went with my trusty shovel because I need it done and I know I can do it. The same bottom lines apply to EVERYTHING in producing an image, whether a still one or moving. It is not HOW you do it, more importantly, it is WHAT you do. This weeks webcast on animation, is a great example of the "what not how" idea that is so important. There are no boundaries to producing successful work if you know what you want and have SOME tool to work with. A technically blessed jewelry and product photographer with an ability to "measure 3 times and cut once", might not need Photoshop to bring his or her vision to fruition. If you are a Photoshop composing junkie with a taste for perfectly hand painted shadows, Photoshop, might be what you need to bring that same vision to life. Short story long: there are SO few obstacles that will prevent you from producing the work you want. Knowing what you want, and working with intent, will enable you to produce what you want using almost anything. In this case, this webcast is a great example of a way for someone with an image to create a beautiful "moving image", really quickly and successfully.
